The Amazon was named one of the 7 wonders of the world in 2011. The Amazon River is the second longest (6400 kilometers) in the world after the Nile. It has over 1,100 tributaries, 17 of which are over 1,500 kilometers long.
It is surrounded by tropical forests that cover an area belonging to nine countries: Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. Vast forest areas are flooded every rainy season.
