9 popular tourist attractions that no longer exist because we destroyed them
Today, the popularity of tourist attractions is largely dependent on social media. 50% of travelers reported that online information and advertising influenced their travel plans. But this growing popularity is not at all good for some places. And it's not just about rubbish or graffiti on the walls that tourists leave behind. Humans can wreak havoc in a variety of ways, from simple breathing to deliberate destruction.
We want to show you 9 popular landmarks that were destroyed by people for various reasons.

1. Maya Bay on Phi Phi Islands, Thailand.
This place became popular among tourists after the movie "Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio". At that point, the beach was seen by about 5,000 people every day. Therefore, in June 2018, it was closed indefinitely for restoration.
2. Coral on Christmas Island, Australia.
In just 10 months, over 90% of the reef was destroyed. Some corals were bleached while others died. This was due to heat stress caused by climate change.
3. Guaira Falls on the border of Brazil and Paraguay.
This beautiful place was a cascade of waterfalls. In 1982, they were flooded by a reservoir formed by the Itaipu hydroelectric power station. And the stones there were removed with dynamite.
4. Altamira Cave in Spain.
It was closed to visitors in 2002. Large tourist groups damaged the paintings by simply breathing and producing water vapor and carbon dioxide, causing mold to form. In 2001, a replica of the cave and museum was built nearby for tourists to enjoy the reproductions.
5. Chacaltaya Glacier in Bolivia.
This glacier was formed over 18,000 years ago and was one of the highest in South America. Since 1980, its area began to decrease rapidly, and in 2009 the glacier completely disappeared due to global warming.
6. Lake Poopo in Bolivia.
This lake dried up completely in 2016 due to climate change and the nearby development of agriculture and mining. It is noteworthy that this is the second disappearance of the lake. It dried up for the first time in 1994 and then was revived by rains.
7. Wedding cake is a rock in Australia.
8. Reef on the islands of Raja Ampat, Indonesia.
9. Pont des Arts in Paris.
