4 tons of Nazi gold found on a sunken ship off the coast of Iceland

Categories: History | Water |

A group of British treasure hunters discovered a huge box of gold bars weighing 4 tons and worth 100 million pounds sterling (almost 112 million euros) 193 km from the coast of Iceland. Advanced Marine Services found a treasure trove of gold in the mail room on the SS Minden cargo ship that sank in 1939.

Presumably, the ship sailed on September 6 from Brazil with gold from South American banks, which was loaded onto the ship by employees of Banco Germanico, a subsidiary of the German Dresden Bank.

The British ship HMS Calypso.

On the way to Germany, the SS Minden was spotted by the British cruisers HMS Calypso and HMS Dunedin, and Adolf Hitler ordered the ship's captain to hide or sink the ship so that the cargo would not fall into the hands of the British Royal Navy.

The crew of the SS Minden was rescued by the ship HMS Dunedin and sent to the military base of Scapa Flow Harbor on the Orkney Islands, and the ship itself sank on September 24, 1939, just after the Second World War began.

Representatives of the company Advanced Marine Services requested permission from the Icelandic government to open the hull of the vessel to get the box. Moreover, they want to pick up the find and take the contents to the UK, since it was they who discovered it.
