Before settling among the trees, he served as a Marine at Fort Lewis for 6 years. It's hard to say what prompted the man to give up his usual life in the city and start living from scratch in the Hoh Rain Forest, which is located on the western side of the Olympic National Park two hours drive from Port Angeles.
Perhaps he was tired of the stuffy and restless atmosphere of an overloaded city. Or maybe he just loves solitude and he likes to lead a solitary life of a hermit.

Mick walks barefoot most of the time. He was even nicknamed "Barefoot Sensei".
About 25 years ago, Mick grew a beard, threw away his shoes, left his family and went to live in the Hoh Forest.
However, the man did not completely isolate himself from society. He communicated with local residents of nearby settlements.
He also agreed to become the hero of the National Geographic program "The Legend of Mick Dodge".
In addition to serving in the army, Mick also worked as a mechanic.
Since 1991, Mick decided to walk almost without shoes. According to him, thanks to this, he was cured of plantar fasciitis, back pain and hammer-like deformity of the toes.
His hermithood helped him to truly connect with nature.
In April 2016, Mick had a falling out with the producers of the National Geographic program, and they stopped collaborating and filming.
Mick bought a small house, and although he still spends most of his time in the woods, he can often be seen driving around the neighborhood with his dog in a car.
