By Vika https://pictolic.com/article/why-do-people-change-their-body.htmlNearly half of all adults have at least one tattoo, and 11% of the population has at least one piercing (other than the earlobe). In addition, there are several other types of body modification such as eye tattoos, subcutaneous implants, and tongue splits. While some people choose not to alter their bodies in any way, there are various scientific explanations for why others decide to go through with it.
Pictolic wanted to know the psychological reasons for body modification and compiled this information so that you can understand it too.

1. The body can secrete "pleasant" chemicals.
Every time someone modifies their body, endorphins are released and a positive feeling arises. Because of this, people tend to remember the moment they get a piercing or tattoo as a happy time and go and do it again.
2. It is a form of art or fashion expression.
Some people use clothes or cosmetics, others use their own bodies. Tattoo artists are becoming more proficient at creating designs on people's skin, and piercings and other body modifications are often seen as fashion accessories to complete the overall look.
3. Helps create a sense of individuality.
Each person is unique, but some like to improve themselves by making unique modifications to their body. They want to be special and different from others. It also helps them create their own identity.
4. It can perpetuate the memory.
One can use body modifications as a self-healing process. People who have lost someone, gone through a traumatic experience, or want to memorialize something often choose to commemorate those events on their skin and body.
5. It's a tradition.
Some people see body modification as a spiritual awakening, an initiation process. Some cultures also use it as a rite of passage from childhood to adulthood.
6. Show physical tolerance.
We can see a lot of people who are trying to overcome pain, obstacles, and their general personal limitations, and body modification is one of these movements. This shows courage and resilience.
7. This is an impulsive act.
Not everyone who gets a piercing, tattoo, or other body modification does so after deep thought. Some do it as a pure impulse. This is why we see tattoos being covered up and even removed. In fact, 17% of people who get a tattoo regret their tattoo and are considering having it removed.
