The Joker has the most nominations — 11. And if the nominations "Best Actor", "Best Film" and several technical ones, like "Best Sound", were quite expected, then the name of Todd Phillips in the director's category surprised many critics. Also, the nomination for "Best Adapted Screenplay" is not entirely clear, because only the image of the main character was taken from the Joker comics, the hero's story is a figment of the screenwriters' imagination.
In his ninth film, Tarantino, as in "Inglourious Bastards," turned to an alternate history. The plot of "Once upon a Time in... Hollywood" is built around the brutal murder of American actress Sharon Tate by Charles Manson's gang. The film takes the viewer to Los Angeles in the 60s, where the famous actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) trying to overcome a creative crisis. His best friend and understudy, played by Brad Pitt, helps him.
The anti-war drama "1917" by Sam Mendes ("American Beauty") has already collected a bunch of awards, including the Golden Globe as the best film). The events unfold during the First World War: two young British soldiers are tasked to cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack. The tape is stylized for shooting "one frame". A similar method was used, for example, when creating "Birdman" by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (in 2015 he was awarded the Oscars in the categories "Best Film" and "Best Cinematography").
Martin Scorsese does not change his favorite gangster theme and actors. Moreover, the director even turned to the innovative technology of "rejuvenation" to Robert de Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci played heroes of their own age and 20 years younger in The Irishman. It turned out to be imperfect, but the tape still received a nomination for visual effects. Although the film will compete for the Oscar in 10 nominations at once and received mostly warm reviews from critics, according to statistics, only a fifth of the audience watched the 3.5-hour saga to the end.
The anti-war film "Jojo Rabbit" received six nominations. The hero of an atypical comedy by New Zealand director Taika Waititi is a 10—year-old German boy who considers himself a devoted Nazi. He even makes friends with an imaginary Adolf Hitler, but accidentally finds out that the mother, played by Scarlett Johansson, hides a Jewish girl in the house.
Scarlett Johansson also played in Noah Baumbach's drama "The Marriage Story". The tape tells the story of a couple who are going through a difficult divorce, and will also compete in six categories.
"Parasites" directed by Pon Joon Ho is also not far behind in terms of the number of nominations. This is the first South Korean film to qualify for the Oscar in the Best Film category. Many are surprised by the presence of "Parasites" in this category, and for good reason: according to the rules, films in which at least 75% of phrases are pronounced in English are nominated for the award.
For other films, the category "Best Foreign Language Film" is provided. However, an exception was made for 11 films in the history of the Oscar. For example, "Whispers and Screams" (Ingmar Bergman, Sweden, 1972) "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (Ang Lee, China, 2000), "Roma" (Alfonso Cuaron, Mexico, 2018) were nominated for the main prize.
The only woman who will compete with male directors in the Best Film category this year is Greta Gerwig with an adaptation of the American classic "Little Women". It's a shame that Gerwig is not in the director's nomination, but her feminist work will compete in five nominations, including the main and minor female roles (Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh), best screenplay, soundtrack and costumes.
Every year, American bookmakers publish their ratings of likely Oscar winners. The figures are influenced by press reviews, forecasts of reputable critics, festival and premium film stories. One of the main "rehearsals" of the "Oscar" is considered to be the "Golden Globe" and the US Producers' Award, which award awards on the eve and have a great influence on betting decisions.
The undisputed leader in the "Best Film" category this year is "Once upon a Time in Hollywood", but Tarantino's director's award is not predicted: according to bookmakers, it will be received by Briton Sam Mendes for "1917". The director of "Parasites", Pon Joon Ho, breathes into the back of his head.
In the acting nominations, the predictions are as follows: Joaquin Phoenix for the role of the Joker and Renee Zellweger for the role of American legend Judy Garland in the biopic "Judy" will most likely take the statuettes for the main roles. The most likely winners of the Best Supporting Role categories are Laura Dern ("Marriage Story") and Brad Pitt ("Once upon a Time in... Hollywood").Bookmakers have almost no doubt that the cameraman's Oscar will go to Roger Deakins for his work on "1917", simulating shooting without editing glues.
"Marriage Story" (best Original screenplay) and "The Irishman" (best Adapted Screenplay) are the leaders in the script nominations in the bookmaker ratings.
Workers decorate the red carpet at the Hollywood Dolby Theater, Los Angeles, USA.
This year, the 92nd ceremony will take place earlier than usual — the night of February 9-10. For the second year in a row, the ceremony will not have a host. The corresponding responsibilities will be shared by the guests and participants.
