Google has expanded its premises in one of New York's oldest buildings. The office of the global IT company is located directly above the huge Chelsea Market, where Googlers regularly visit for a bite to eat when they get bored with free lunches at work. Correspondents of The Business Insider visited the “bread place” and assessed how great the gastronomic choice of employees of the most famous search engine in the world is.

For several years, Google has turned one of the districts of New York into its own campus. In December 2010, the company bought an entire building at 111 Eighth Avenue, paying an equally astronomical $1.9 billion for an office of incredible size (2.8 million square meters).

In 2013, she rented another 33,000-square-foot office nearby, and then several floors in the neighboring 30,000-square-foot Chelsea Market building, which also houses MLB.com and the Food Network. With the new lease agreement, this area has increased by another 25 percent.

1. To imagine how large the resulting Google campus is, you can try to mentally walk around the building at 111 Eighth Avenue: walking around the block will take 20 minutes. In a city known for its skyscrapers, it is not easy to find a building that impresses not with its height, but with its horizontal extent. But the Chelsea Market office center itself is also rather big: it completely occupies a whole block.

2. Once it housed the American biscuit manufacturer Nabisco (the old name is National Biscuit Company). Now only a commemorative glass case with old products remains from the former company. The entire block is saturated with history: the giant at 111 Eighth Avenue was actually built in 1932 - just a year after the Empire State Building.

3. The entire Chelsea Market, located under the office floors, is one large, very long and incredibly diverse food court. The unfinished interior is somewhat reminiscent of the currently popular loft office space, but they are filled not with open spaces with MacBooks, but with a variety of catering establishments designed in the style of old America. Conveniently, the doors to the food court are right across from 111 Eighth Avenue, where thousands of Google employees work.

21. Needless to say: Google knows how to create comfortable working conditions, and gets used to acting on a large scale - as in the case of a giant barge, which, however, has not been heard from for a long time.

And once the New York office of Google was located in Starbucks.
