There are many places in the kitchen where dirt and germs regularly accumulate. Cleanliness expert Deyan Dimitrov told about those secluded kitchen corners where dust and grease usually hide from the eyes of the hostess.
Here are seven kitchen accessories that can unpleasantly surprise real clean people. Take note of them and keep them perfectly clean with these effective tips from the cleaning master.
Even if your potholders look clean from the outside, germs, dirt and bits of food can accumulate in their fabric. It is best to wash the potholders every week, after soaking them for 10 minutes in a solution of dishwashing liquid and soda in a ratio of 1:1 (one tablespoon each). If the potholders are made of fabric, they can be put in the washing machine, if they are made of silicone, they need to be washed by hand.
Many microorganisms accumulate in the cracks on the wooden blades, especially if they are used in the preparation of raw meat and fish. If they are not thoroughly cleaned, there is a risk that germs will spread to other kitchen appliances and products. To avoid this, you need to regularly soak wooden spoons in a solution of hydrogen peroxide before washing. Add 1 teaspoon of peroxide to 2 liters of water, put wooden appliances there for a few minutes, and then wash and dry them as usual.
It is best to store wooden spoons and spatulas in an upright position in a separate container. Thus, they will dry better and less dust will accumulate on them.
During heating, splashes of food often fall on the walls of the microwave. As a result, the device is covered with greasy spots. You need to clean the microwave inside and out every week. Wiping with a damp cloth in a hurry is ineffective, since traces of dirt and grease may remain on the upper wall.
To clean the microwave well, dilute 1 teaspoon of white vinegar in 250 ml of water and heat the solution in a bowl for 2 minutes at high power. The water will boil, and the inner walls of the microwave will be covered with steam. Then turn off the microwave and let it cool down. Wipe the walls using a regular cleaner and a damp cloth. All old stains should be easily cleaned.
Over time, not only do stains appear on the kitchen apron, small pieces of food and crumbs can also stick to it. Especially a lot of garbage accumulates in the front pocket. It is necessary to wash the apron regularly after several uses. To get rid of the unpleasant smell of the fabric, soak the apron for 15 minutes in a warm solution of water with one part of washing powder and one part of vinegar, and then wash it in a typewriter at high temperature.
Hang the apron in a well-ventilated place (for example, on the back of the kitchen door). This way you can prevent the appearance of unpleasant odors and dampness, keeping the fabric as fresh as possible.
Shelves with colorful seasonings and bottles of sauces are a real decoration of the kitchen. But dust often accumulates on them and spots, streaks and greasy plaque appear. To keep the shelves clean, you need to thoroughly wipe them with a damp cloth every few weeks, looking into the farthest corners.
Before putting jars and bottles with seasonings and sauces back on the shelves, make sure that the surface is dry. So you will prevent the appearance of dampness.
Experts advise using different towels for different needs so as not to spread germs. Harmful bacteria can get on the skin or into the stomach, causing irritation and even poisoning. It is best to have at least three towels in the kitchen — for wiping plates, for hands and for cleaning kitchen surfaces.
To prevent the proliferation of microbes, you need to wash kitchen towels every few days. It is best to purchase several sets and change them while one is in the wash. Towels should be washed at a temperature of at least 40 degrees so that they are sterilized.
Delicious toasts are obtained only in a clean toaster. To do this, it is worth regularly checking the pallet, which is located under the openings for slices of bread. If there are a lot of crumbs gathered there, it must be cleaned.
Before cleaning, do not forget to unplug the toaster from the outlet! Take out the tray and empty it over the sink or trash can. Clean the bread openings with a dry toothbrush, and then thoroughly wash the tray with ordinary dishwashing liquid. Let it dry well and then put it back into the toaster. And finally, shake the appliance over the sink again so that all the crumbs will definitely fall out.
