Individuals did not realize that the animal had died, and continued to be photographed with it.

Everything happened quickly — dolphins have a very thick and oily skin. This means that they maintain a stable body temperature under water, but outside of it their body quickly dehydrates and dies. Experts from the Wildlife Foundation urged anyone who sees a dolphin washed up on the shore to send the animal back into the water as soon as possible.

Franciscan dolphins are considered a rare species — found only in Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. There are about 30 thousand individuals of this subspecies left in the world.
