It seemed to photographer and photo editor Carrie Boretz that New York was always crowded with people who did nothing but kiss, sleep and dream about beauty. Her book, Street, chronicles her adventures in the metropolis between 1975 and 1998, as she breathlessly explored a city teeming with conflict, anxiety, and kindness.

While collaborating with The New York Times, the photographer realized her predisposition to revisit places to which she was emotionally attached. It must be said that Carrie never wanted to cross the boundaries of what was permitted by moral and ethical standards on the way to the epicenter of simple city life. On the contrary, she always sought to explore the city and its people, becoming one of them, embodying the sensitivity and vulnerability characteristic of New Yorkers.

Some prefer to characterize those times as “the years when people had nothing sacred,” but Carrie’s photographs tell of the purity of hearts, which in itself seems like some kind of incomprehensible, eternal jewel, hidden somewhere nearby, dissolved in the air of parks and houses and crossroads that never sleep.
