A New York court found Anna Sorokina guilty of fraud amounting to tens of thousands of dollars, which she stole from banks, hotels and friends. The guilty verdict was announced after a trial that lasted almost a month. Starting from May 9, 2019, the con artist will begin serving a 15-year sentence behind bars.
Anna "threw" banking institutions, hotels and her friends for $275,000 within 10 months.
The pseudo-heiress lived in a luxury hotel apartment in New York, which she could not pay, promised her friend an expensive trip to Morocco and left her with a debt of $ 62,000 and showed fake certificates from the bank, which indicated that she was being given a loan of $ 22 million to open a private art club.
Sorokina turned the trial into a real fashion show, refusing to leave her cell in a prison uniform. She defiantly wore designer outfits, calling herself "an inspiring businesswoman, passionate about New York extravagance."
Her lawyer Todd Spodek insisted that Anna was just trying to buy time in order to pay off her debts, and was filled with ambitions to become a famous entrepreneur when she pulled off her scams.
The fraudster lived in luxury hotels with zero in her bank account, dined at the best restaurants and even hired a personal trainer, one class with which cost $ 300. She not only invented another name for herself, but also created a whole group of imaginary assistants so that the bank would believe her and extend the loan.
Anna convinced people and staff of financial institutions that she owned a 60 million fortune in Europe, and promised to cover the costs of luxury hotels and other expensive pleasures. The woman said that she was friends with many celebrities and defiantly scattered crumpled $100 bills everywhere.
