The Coopershild Cheese Race is held on the last Monday of May at 12:00 local time as part of the Spring Festival on Cooper's Hill, near Gloucester in the Cotswolds, England.
The contestants climb to the top of the hill and wait for the signal. Then a cheese head is allowed to roll down the slope, after which all the participants rush in pursuit. Several ambulances and a rescue team are always on duty at the foot of the hill. The one who crossed the finish line first and grabbed the cheese gets it as a prize. The race is very often associated with health risks — in previous years, participants received serious injuries to the back, neck, head; broke legs, arms, ribs.
