By Pictolic https://pictolic.com/article/the-delights-and-challenges-of-life-in-a-medieval-castle-1482.htmlIn our day to visit this castle is simpler than you think — a medieval building turned into museums, which you can safely wander around and see, how our ancestors lived hundreds of years ago. However, there are private castles, in which the owners or live by themselves or rent out to guests. A girl named Julia shared on Imgur their experience of life in a medieval castle in Germany. Here is her photo and story.
Julia was born in Russia and raised in Germany. She now lives in Spain where he works on multiple IT projects and is engaged in photography.
The castle area of 600 square meters, in which Julia and her husband had lived for two years, was built in 1482 and restored in 1972. The couple invited the owners to help with the renovation of the castle in exchange for living in it, and they agreed, because the castle is really needed to update some things have not changed since the middle Ages.
For example, the castle had to constantly flushing, mostly wood, and it had no running water. The castle had not only a local war, but the First and the Second world war, so there was no reason to restore it completely and equipped with modern amenities. Of course, life in this castle may not seem the most glamorous and fabulous, but Julia, with her husband and cats it's liking.
Speaking of cats: Julia six of them, and in the castle, they felt like kings. Not only that, they served the people, so they also regularly went on a Royal hunt in the nearby forest, where he brought home the kill.
Modernization of the castle began in the kitchen where Julia and her husband had installed the stove and the sink. The sink was impossible to use, but the couple had plans to spend the pump from the well. Electric stove, too, did not always work, and their eating habits, as Julia said, were "truly medieval".
Julia said that they "have never had to upgrade the castle to the full". In the two years that they lived there, they were engaged in small repair "of Windows, doors, a large balcony attached to it, the glass house, also fixed the electricity, held the phone (because we needed Wi-Fi), patched holes, through which could penetrate rodents, etc.". Julia didn't have enough time to implement all the planned projects:
Now that part of the house where Julia lived with her husband, used as a hotel for people working remotely.
Due to the fact that the stove did not work, had to eat in the middle Ages
Julia said that his ability to catch and fully cook the fish she owes to the fact that I was born in Russia
All the furniture, including the cabinets in the kitchen, Julia made herself
She also made a bed that weighs 400 pounds
The only place where you can meet cats in the winter — at the furnace
Winter in the castle, it was quite cold, and the only source of heat was a big fireplace. The temperature in the house at times dropped to 8 degrees. Every week accumulated up to 60 liters of ashes. Summer wasn't much better — the temperature in the castle had soared to 40 degrees.
Julia also had to bathe in cold water. And yet, as it stands in the woods, they often frequented uninvited guests — wild animals. But Julia believes that this experience helped her to appreciate such simple things as water, heating and electricity. Now she's happy and just the roof over your head:
The castle was renovated toilet, but rinse it had from the bucket.
On the right armrest is installed ashtray, a wooden seat suck. Handle left — not to flush, and to call the servants.
Another interesting detail — a large balcony and glass house, facing the forest, so that visitors could admire the mind. This is my favorite part of the castle Julia, but she admits to sleep there scary:
Inside the glass house under the balcony
Christmas tree cut down in part of the forest that belonged to the owners of the castle. The cats were delighted
