On September 18, a 37-year-old man was struck by lightning at a construction site in Chengdu, southwest China. He fell and landed right on the protruding rebar. A two-meter metal beam passed through the entire body. The victim was urgently hospitalized.
The builder was taken to the hospital conscious. Specialists of the Department of Cardiac Surgery, General Surgery and Urology joined together to treat the patient.
The X-ray showed that the rod pierced the diaphragm and passed through the right side of the pericardial sac.
Doctors performed a seven-hour operation, removed the damaged tissue from the lungs and liver, and then successfully removed the metal rod.
The man is in the intensive care unit. Doctors say that he is on the mend, and his condition is stable.
