Robert Edward McGinnis was born in 1926 in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, and his childhood and youth were spent in Wyoming. Edward began to draw at an early school age — his first teacher was his father, who helped draw the cartoon character Popeye the sailor.
McGinnis always claims that he owes his success to his parents. Father and mother made every effort for the boy to develop his talent. It was his mother who insisted that he get his first art education at the Cincinnati Museum of Art's Saturday Drawing School.
After completing the course, the very young McGinnis went to California to get a job at the Walt Disney studios. A promising artist was hired and Robert spent several years honing his skills, drawing his favorite cartoon characters. At the same time, he studied fine art at the The University of Ohio, which gave the world a lot of famous masters.
After serving in the army, McGinnis joined Dell Publishing in 1958, where he began creating covers for American bestsellers. It was then that he developed his own distinctive, recognizable style and began to paint the femme fatales and manly agents who made him famous.
Cullen Murphy, editor of the British magazine Vanity Fair, wrote in his memoirs about McGinnis the following:
Now Robert McGinnis is 94 years old, but he still paints and is as unsurpassed in his skill as he was half a century ago.
