Telecom-expedition "Megaphone on top"

Over 20 journalists and bloggers from Moscow, St. Petersburg, from the regions of southern Russia and the republics of the North Caucasus took part in the telecom expedition "Megaphone at the height" - a test drive of the quality of mobile communications in Sochi and at the popular ski resort of Krasnaya Polyana. This is already the third expedition with public testing of the capabilities of MegaFon services, organized by the operator's Caucasian branch.

Participants of the telecom expedition "MegaFon at height" for three days were testing the speeds of 3G / 4G mobile Internet in the networks of the Olympic telecom operator, having made over 100 measurements of data transfer speeds.

During the telecom expedition, MegaFon announced the commercial launch of the LTE-Advanced network in the resort. Sochi was the first city in Russia where the LTE-Advanced communication standard was publicly tested during the Olympics, and became the 12th region of the country where MegaFon subscribers can use the latest generation mobile Internet at speeds up to 150 Mbps.

The participants of the telecom expedition could observe the fastest mobile Internet in the LTE-Advanced network on the Rosa Khutor embankment. Data transfer rates have crossed the 80 Mbps mark. In the coverage area of MegaFon's 3G networks, the participants of the telecom expedition recorded speeds of over 18 Mbps even during a period of high load. For comparison: at this speed, a user can upload over 600 Instagram photos to the network in 1 minute. Such 3G speed indicators are also the result of a successful winter network upgrade: Megafon has implemented DualCell technology at 90% of base stations in Sochi and Krasnaya Polyana. With its help, mobile devices, receiving a signal from two frequencies at once, receive twice the data transfer rate from the base station to the subscriber due to the use of more bandwidth.

Station "Sosna" is located on the embankment of the village of Estosadok. Such a stylization was chosen by MegaFon in order to ensure that the communication equipment would successfully fit into the surrounding landscape. The station is equipped with equipment for voice communication and data transmission in 3G networks at the maximum possible speed up to 42 Mbps. During the telecom expedition at the Sosna station, a result of 24 Mbps was recorded.

In the Krasnodar Territory, over the past three years, the level of Internet traffic consumption in MegaFon networks has increased 6 times. "Megafon" subscribers are leaders in Internet consumption in the entire Caucasian branch of the company and download about 6-7 petabytes per month. For comparison: such a large amount of information is approximately 30 times larger than the size of the film repository of the largest online cinema in Runet ivi, which consists of several tens of thousands of professional video files.

On the ski slopes of the Gorki Gorod resort, bloggers “caught” 3G speeds over 18 Mbps. Here, at an altitude of 1460 meters, the participants of the telecom expedition met with the director of the Sochi regional branch of MegaFon Anatoly Gorbunov.

Of course, no one ignored the resemblance of Anatoly Gorbunov to the President of Russia. Anatoly Vasilyevich himself does not try to be like VVP in everything, believing that it is better to remain yourself. However, he has much in common with the head of state. He also loves sports, runs, visits the gym three times a week. In addition, he, like VVP, has two daughters. But he is not interested in politics, leaving all his strength for the development of the telecommunications industry.

We are changing even faster than the needs of our customers, and they are increasingly choosing high-speed traffic.”

Megafon, having become the general partner of the 2014 Winter Games, invested more than 10 billion rubles in the preparation of the Olympics. For effective telecommunications support of the Games, the company installed about 950 base stations in Sochi, more than 270 of which support 4G. In the Mountainous Olympic cluster, MegaFon built more than 100 km of fiber-optic communication lines, in the Coastal — more than 40 km, and in the territory between the clusters — more than 80 km.

Today, MegaFon in Sochi is the leading telecom operator with the widest mobile network coverage map, with high speed mobile Internet performance, including in the highlands. The operator's signal covers the entire territory of Greater Sochi with a population of about 500 thousand people. About 50% of the operator's clients are active users of the mobile Internet. MegaFon's strategy for 2016 is to constantly grow, maintaining leadership in market share, mobile revenue and quality of services. To this end, in 2016 MegaFon plans to expand the geography of mobile coverage of the LTE network and increase the capabilities of 3G networks, because the majority of mobile users mainly use 3G networks to access the Internet from mobile devices.

The highest Megafon station in Krasnaya Polyana is Olimpiyskaya. It is located at around 700 meters above sea level and is one of the largest and highest base stations of the operator in the Krasnodar Territory. Its height is over 85 meters. The station is the main transmission hub in the high-mountainous part of Greater Sochi and carries out the operational distribution of the main flow of all mobile signals between other high-altitude communication facilities of the company. In 2013, this station was solemnly launched into operation by the titled Russian figure skater Irina Slutskaya, Olympic medalist and Sochi-2014 Ambassador.
