The consequences of an alcoholic “marathon” are especially felt in the first days after its completion. Pathophysiologists from the Albert Szent-Györgyi School of Medicine at the University of Szeged in Hungary have researched this topic and found out how drinking affects a person's behavior.
The experiment was carried out on six-week-old mice. For four days they were poured 20% alcohol into the drinker for 2-4 hours. On the fifth day, after the "binge", the rodents were injected with a selective CRF1 receptor antagonist antalarmine or a CRF2 receptor antagonist astressin. They were then run into an elevated plus maze used in anxiety research.
After completing the maze, the mice were made to swim and socialize in the "social arena". All these experiments were needed to determine the degree of depression in the experimental subjects. The last experiment with the "arena" also helps to study the ability of animals to communicate with relatives. At the end of the study, a blood sample was taken from the mice to study the hormonal levels.
Mice after a four-day "binge" went through the maze much better than relatives-teetotalers from the control group. They were also reluctant to swim and always tried to get out of the water. "Social Arena" showed that mice remained as sociable after alcohol as before drinking. But it was also noticed that "drunken" rodents spent more time with unfamiliar individuals.
One day after the cessation of alcohol intake, the animals changed their behavior. They left the labyrinth less and preferred to stay in the water for a long time, swimming. As for communication, the mice also continued to be keenly interested in their brothers.
Scientists, having mocked plenty of hangover animals, summed up their work as follows:
This study has turned the view of scientists about the consequences of drinking binges. It turned out that this state has a good antidepressant property, which begins to decline after a day. Does this mean that when you are in a bad mood, you should immediately go on a binge? Of course not. The many negative effects of drinking alcohol outweigh some of the positives.
