Valery Yulievich Levitin was born on December 6, 1960 in Moscow. In elementary school, he began to go to the photo club at the House of Pioneers.

He studied at schools 175 and 109. In 1983 he graduated from the V.V. Kuibyshev.

Until the end of 1986, he worked in the SU-13 (construction department) of the Mosstroy-2 trust as a foreman.

Since 1987, he worked on a contract basis in the magazine "64-Chess Review" of the publishing house "Soviet Sport". Collaborated with the Megapolis-Express newspaper, the Stolitsa magazine, the Sobesednik newspaper and Express-gazeta. From 2001 to 2011, he worked for the Kommersant newspaper.

Since October 10, 2011 he has been a photojournalist at the RIA Novosti agency.
