One of the top 10 photographers of our time according to Popular Photography magazine, Irving Penn did not immediately find his calling. In his youth, Penn was going to become a painter and studied at the School of Art, but soon, for some reason, destroyed all his work. So the world lost the artist Irving Penn, but gained the future famous photographer. In 1943, his first photograph appeared on the cover of Vogue, and this date can be considered the beginning of his brilliant career.

Among the works of the photographer there are no random and unprincipled ones, for each he invented a scenario, the models turned into actors and played roles. He, slowly, for hours could wait for the moment, and only when he was sure, he deftly pressed the “descent” button. Many of his works are exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

1. Memoirs of model Jean Patchett: “We flew 32 hundred miles. We got to the place and sat there idle for a whole week. And all this time, Mr. Penn did not even touch his cell. I started to worry. Every day I got up, got ready to shoot, and he didn’t shoot anything. In the end, I remember, we wandered into a small cafe. There was a guy sitting across from me. The mood was terrible. I really wanted to send everything away, to go home, and I put pearls in my mouth, took off my shoes - my legs ached from endless walking. And suddenly Penn shouted: “Stop! I'm filming!" So in 1949 one of the best works of Irving Penn "Cafe in Lima" was born.
