Photo from the rare edition of Ian Berry "The English"

By Pictolic https://pictolic.com/article/photo-from-the-rare-edition-of-ian-berry-the-english.htmlThey say that the famous French historian Michelet, who taught a course in the history of England at the Paris College de France, began it with the following words: “England is an island. And now you know as much about her as I do.” Another Frenchman, the writer Francois Mauriac, said that only after the death of an Englishman, when you get access to his intimate diaries, when plump volumes of his private correspondence are published, when thousands of memoirs are written and read about him, only then do you begin to admit with a great deal of doubt unacceptable - that the Englishman is not a Martian, but an ordinary person. Paradoxes? Of course. But they contain grains of truth. But if England and the British, or rather, their understanding, are behind seven castles, then is it worth opening Ian Berry's photo album?))
The answer to this question should be, in my opinion, a resounding yes. From every page, from every photo of the album breathes England and the British. Even a person who has never been to the British Isles will unmistakably feel this trend. There are two reasons for this, at least the main ones - the skill of Ian Berry himself and the uniqueness of the nature with which he works. Of course, The Englishmen is not Encyclopædia Britannica, but in the album, with a generous hand (or a camera?), those traits and dashes are scattered that just create a unique phenomenon called "English character".
