But robots can do dirty tricks, and even the most primitive of them do it. Recently it became known that the Roomba J7 series robot vacuum cleaner, manufactured by iRobot, photographed its owner in the toilet on the toilet. Maybe no one would make a fuss, but a sneaky device made a woman a "star".
The Roomba J7 robot vacuum cleaner didn't just take pictures unnoticed. He sent them to the servers of the Scale AI startup, which deals with the problems of artificial intelligence training. As it turned out, there are "masterpieces" among the dull photos and video reports taken by smart household appliances from the baseboard level.
In the fall of 2020, one of the employees of the Venezuelan Scale AI division stole photos from the database in which robot vacuum cleaners captured their owners in unambiguous situations. There were some very intimate moments among them. A startup employee posted pictures on social networks, in several closed groups for perverts.
In 2022, this became known to the masses, and someone even sent screenshots of photos to the MIT Technology Review. One of them shows a woman sitting on the toilet, and the other shows a boy of 8-9 years old lying on the floor. The images also show rooms located in different countries of the world.
iRobot does not deny that their robots take pictures of people. But at the same time they assure that their vacuum cleaners are not spying on anyone. Home appliances operate according to protocols that provide for the study of various objects, especially moving ones. This approach allows robots to learn quickly and independently get out of dead-end situations.
Additionally, the manufacturer noted that only experimental models have a shooting function. iRobot vacuum cleaner robots of this type are issued exclusively to programmers, designers and testers for a detailed analysis of their work. The J7 with the recording function has never been on sale.
