The fact that professional boxing can damage the brain has been known for a long time. Because of the blows at competitions and trainings, the athletes' brain gets constant shakes that do not benefit it. Therefore, after 5-10 years of a sports career, boxers greatly increase the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.

Now it turned out that amateur boxing is also dangerous. The researchers analyzed data from 2,500 men aged 45 to 59 years, some of whom were engaged in amateur boxing. They were monitored for 35 years and every 5 years the men were examined.

A third of amateur boxers have experienced various cognitive impairments with age. Memory, perception, attention and speech were affected. Those respondents who did not box were less likely to suffer from such problems — in only 20% of cases. Senile dementia came to amateur boxers 5 years earlier than to their non-boxing peers.

The head of the study, Professor Elwood, believes that the data obtained are of great value. The scientist plans to continue studying the impact of different sports on health. In his opinion, this will make future generations healthier. It's no secret that many in childhood and youth are fond of martial arts. It is likely that this may be enough to get problems in old age.
