The aurora borealis is the glow of the upper layers of the atmospheres of planets with a magnetosphere, due to their interaction with charged particles of the solar wind. In the Northern Hemisphere it is also called the Northern lights, and in the high latitudes of the Southern hemisphere — the southern. (© Yannis Behrakis / Reuters)

The color of the aurora depends on which gas particles the solar wind interacts with. And this is determined by the layer of the atmosphere in which the interaction takes place. (© Yannis Behrakis / Reuters)
