1. Annabelle (2014)

5.4 /10 on IMDb

Arguably one of the creepiest doll movies to exist, Annabelle details the horrifying supernatural events surrounding a haunted porcelain doll and puts us all off the idea of ever buying a vintage doll, ever.

The story of Annabelle follows a young couple expecting their first child. Their life is simple and happy until the husband brings home a seemingly innocent gift for his wife; a rare vintage doll in a white dress. Things are fine, until their home is invaded by a satanic cult, and the events that follow involving the doll, now home to a malevolent evil, are nothing short of a nightmare.

While fans may find the first of the Anabelle movies to be the least scary, it does an excellent job of setting up the story and characters for the movies that follow. And if you're worried it won't be spooky, we'd like to remind you that it's loosely based on a very real, very haunted doll.

2. Train to Busan (2016)

7.6 /10 on IMDb

This South Korean action horror managed to slip under our radars, but with a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a spot on Netflix, we're sure it'll get the recognition it deserves.

When a zombie outbreak takes over the city, a man and his daughter are trapped on a speeding train from Seoul to Busan. The couple must fight to survive as the train becomes infested with zombies, as well as the outside world, and hope that their final destination is safe.

Fans and critics praised the movie as a refreshing and exciting addition to the zombie horror genre, calling it a thrilling and terrifying (first-class) ride.

3. Malignant (2021)

6.2/10 on IMDb

Terrifying visions come to life in this slow-burning psychological horror when a young woman begins having visions of strangers being brutally murdered. As if that wasn't haunting enough, her visions turn out to be true.

Malignant excellently sets the pace, unraveling a harrowing tale through flashbacks that build to a startling revelation about her connection to the unknown killer as the young woman steps up to take action and stop the deaths.

Malignant has been praised for its uniqueness and truly unpredictable plot, with special mentions going to director James Wan for another great horror film.

4. The Purge: Election Year (2016)

6.0/10 on IMDb

When presidential candidate Senator Charlie Roan makes it her mission to end the Purge, she learns that her opponents will go to deadly lengths to take her down, and her life descends into deadly chaos on Purge night when she is betrayed and thrown out of her safe house.

The third film in the series weaves socio-political commentary into the violence, high-stakes escapes, and familiar faces, with Leo Barnes returning as Roan's head of security with one mission: make sure they both survive a night filled with death, terror, and maniacal killers on a mission to take them down.

The Purge films seem to be in a league of their own, with a dedicated fan base no matter what direction the films take, and Election Year has proven to be no different, garnering mostly positive reviews from fans.

5. The First Purge (2018)

5.2/10 on IMDb

If you love a good origin story, then The First Purge is just what you're looking for, offering a dark and violent look at the birth of The Purge.

The fourth installment in the dystopian horror franchise takes us back to where it all began with the very first Purge, a deadly experiment confined to Staten Island that spirals out of control over 12 harrowing hours.

Fans loved the deep dive into the beginning, which told the story of the New Founding Fathers and their sick ideals that included paying people $5,000 to participate in the ordeal, and how they rigged the event to ensure a high death toll.

Prime is currently unrated due to its lack of exposure, but this dark South African tale is sure to make your skin crawl as Richard Gua takes the lead role and is seduced by an ancient evil.
