Is it racist? The new series with the dark-skinned Queen of England received minimal audience ratings

The discontent of the audience was caused by the fact that the main role in the film was entrusted to play a black actress Jodie Turner-Smith. She herself claims that she is not surprised by the negative reaction, given that modern society still divides people by skin color.

The mini-series "Anne Boleyn" is based on historical events and tells about the tragic fate of the wife of the despotic King Henry VIII, Anne, who was sentenced to death by her husband. This story has repeatedly inspired writers and directors, so viewers have something to compare the new product of the channel Channel5.

The failure of the series "Anne Boleyn" can be called complete, as its rating on the IMDb service based on 1500 reviews was only 1.5 out of 10. Of course, most reviewers express dissatisfaction with the fact that the role of the Queen of England was entrusted to play a black actress. Someone even rightly pointed out that the idea of removing Nicolas Cage as Nelson Mandela would be no less absurd, but the fighters against racism would not allow it at all.

The skin color of the main character was not the only claim to the project. Some people noted that the script of the series distorts historical facts, which is why the action on the screen often looks stupid. Many are unnerved by the dialogues of the characters, which the creators of the series tried to make as realistic as possible – they were called "a terrible parody of Shakespeare's" and "disgusting stylization".

In fairness, it should be said that reputable publications were more favorable to the series. The Guardian and The Telegraph gave "Anne Boleyn" 3 points, and Empire even 4 out of 5 possible. Critics, unlike viewers, liked Jodie Turner-Smith the most in the show. According to them, she played very convincingly and successfully coped with the tragic role.

When the performer of the main role was asked her opinion of the reaction of the audience, she replied that she did not see anything new in this. Jodi Turner-Smith also noted that the idea of the creators of the project was to show the story of a specific historical person, without reference to racial issues. She believes that the dark-skinned Queen Anne does not offend the white race in any way.
