The popular expression "happy as an elephant" takes on a new meaning in the city zoo of the Polish capital Warsaw. They decided to treat stress in elephants using shock doses of marijuana. No, elephants will not have to be taught to smoke - CBD cannabinoid is injected into animals in the form of special concentrated drops through the trunk.
The use of medical marijuana to treat animals is not new. Cannabis has long been used to treat nervous disorders in dogs and horses. But it was at the Warsaw Zoo that they first guessed how to apply such therapy to elephants.
The project manager, chief veterinarian of the zoo Agnieszka Chuikowska told reporters that treatment has already begun and the first doses of cannabis have already been received by an elephant named Frederica. Dr. Chuikowska says that the animal did not object to taking the drug and took the treatment calmly.
The drug is injected through the trunk 2-3 times a day, a few drops. By the way, the dosage of a cannabinoid for an elephant coincides with a horse. The aim of the project is to study the prospects of stress treatment in elephants with a drug that has shown its effectiveness in the case of other mammals. So far, only one elephant receives marijuana in medical doses, but soon two more animals will join the experiment.
NASA planned to conduct a much more visual experiment, however, with people, a year ago. The agency was looking for volunteers who are willing to lie on the bed for 70 days and smoke marijuana daily. It is unknown whether the plans of American scientists have come to life.
