How water is purified in Moscow

Everything seems to be clear here: the water goes into the sewer, and then into the Moscow River. So, yes, not quite. Today we will look at the Kuryanovsk treatment facilities and see what happens to our dirty water. Go?"
(Total 22 photos)
1. The sewerage of Moscow as a whole has a slope to the southeast. From the sewer, water comes to the beginning of the "chain" - the reception and distribution chamber.
A third of the volume of water coming here is industrial waste. The storm sewer belongs to Mosvodostok, and water from it does not enter Kuryanovo.
2. In general, this compartment is closed in the normal mode, but if you open it a little, it will be so ambre that it is impossible to stay there for a long time. However, we won't.
3. The first step is mechanical cleaning. The trash grate (as its name implies) traps large debris.
4. Rags, all sorts of scraps of food, pads, condoms and other traces of vital activity settle on the grates and are removed from the water.
5.
6. After that, the water enters the primary settling tanks, where part of the pollution simply settles at the bottom and is then removed.
7. This is followed by aeration tanks - here the water is purified using activated sludge with microorganisms.
8.
9. Of course, there is a smell next to the aerotank. But it does not go to any comparison with the smell of incoming water.
10.
11. Then again into the sedimentation tanks, but already in the secondary ones. The main task of the secondary clarifier is to separate the activated sludge from the aeration tank from the water.
12.
13. The element, directed from the center to the edge, rotates, there is a sludge pump in it, which removes the settled sludge.
14. The water obtained after the secondary sump is not inferior in transparency to the one that flows in our water supply (but this does not mean that it can be drunk).
15. On the left - water scooped from the secondary sump, in the center - tap water, on the right - raw water from the sewer.
16. Seagulls often fly in.
17. The sludge obtained from the water at all stages is transported for dehydration to sludge sites located in the area.
18. And the water itself goes further.
19. The last stage is ultraviolet treatment and disinfection.
20. Due to it, bacteria are destroyed.
21. After UV treatment, the water is discharged into the Moscow River.
22. The UV processing unit, by the way, is not some garbage for you, but the best investment project of 2013.
According to Mosvodokanal, the water leaving the treatment facilities is cleaner than the one that is taken for preparation and sent to our taps. After all, the water that drains from Kuryanovo then ends up in the Oka, the Volga ... And there are water intakes of other large cities.
