He was born in 1953 in the small town of Talance, Bordeaux district. Gerard began studying photography when he was 15 years old, having enrolled as an apprentice in the darkroom of one of the daily newspapers of Bordeaux. At the age of 18, Ransinan already got a job as a photojournalist and did materials for several news agencies at once.
The real fame came to the young photographer at the age of 21, when he worked at the Parisian press agency Sygma. This job required constant travel to hot spots. Ransinan filmed for the agency the Algerian earthquake, the war in Lebanon, the riots in Great Britain, the Olympic Games, the World Championships in football and athletics. At the same time, he began to create his own photo portraits of show business stars, famous athletes, scientists and statesmen.
In 1986, the photographer stopped his work at Sygma and created his own agency, and in 1989 became an independent photographer working in the genres of artistic and advertising photography.
Creating his compositions, the photographer draws inspiration from the famous works of great painters of past times. It touches on all the burning problems of our time: hunger, wars, the destruction of spirituality, environmental disasters, the violation of basic human rights, the dangers of globalization, the dominance of unhealthy food and many others.
In many of Gerard Rancinan's photographic works, "primary sources" are clearly visible - paintings by Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio, Delacroix, Bosch and others. Therefore, for connoisseurs of classical painting, the photographer's works are of particular interest.
Famous, easily recognizable paintings for specialists are mixed with the events of modern liveliness, and as a result, something completely new is born, carrying with it a lot of associations.
As a rule, all the characters in Ransinan's photographs are famous people, our contemporaries.
The work of the photographer enjoys worldwide recognition. His works are regularly published by such publications as Time, Life Magazine, Sunday Times Magazine, Paris Match and other well-known magazines.
Since 1984, Ransinan has been constantly collaborating with the most famous American sports magazine — Sports Illustrated. The artist has won the prestigious World Press Awards four times.
Many of Ransinan's works can be compared with monumental paintings — they are grandiose multi-figure compositions (the number of characters in them can reach up to 40) and have a size of several meters. One of these works - a giant photo work called "The Girls of the Batman family" (179 × cm) was sold at auction for 97 pounds.
