Dramatic battle between kingfisher and snake

Photographer Nitin Jain was looking for another subject to shoot when his eyes fell on a kingfisher fighting underwater in an unexpected battle. It seems that the kingfisher, aiming for easy prey, somewhat overestimated his strength.

The hungry bird pulled the snake out of the water - but was shocked when the reptile began to fight back and grabbed her by the neck.

The dramatic wildlife scene was captured by 38-year-old amateur photographer Nitin Jain.

Nitin says: “Suddenly a kingfisher appeared from the water. I was shocked when I saw him fighting a snake. During the battle, which lasted about a minute, a ferocious snake could be seen fluttering over the water. She grabbed the kingfisher by the neck, dipping him back into the water several times. The fight seemed to be beyond the power of the kingfisher when the snake dragged him under the water, but the bird suddenly gathered all its strength, freed itself from the snake's grip and flew away.

Landing on a nearby tree, the kingfisher sat quietly for two hours, resting from the shocking battle."

The photographer, who took the pictures in the Indian city of Pune, added: “I photographed herons and cormorants and did not expect such a battle to happen. I am very fortunate to have witnessed such a spectacle. I have been photographing kingfishers for many years, but I have never seen anything like it.”
