We have prepared this post especially for those who burn nerve cells in traffic jams every day. We recommend adding it to your bookmarks and opening it every time you feel ready to drive on the sidewalk. So, six of the most impressive traffic jams in history.
In August 1969, a rock festival called "Woodstock" was held for the first time in the town of Bethel, New York. The organizers planned that about 25 thousand people would come to the concert. But we miscalculated a little. "Woodstock" gathered almost 500 thousand rockers from all over the East coast! As a result, a 32-kilometer-long traffic jam formed on Highway 17B. The police tried to resolve the situation, but in vain. Many left their cars on the side of the road and walked. The musicians had to be transported to the venue of the festival by helicopter.
A powerful blizzard covered the northeastern part of the United States in January 1978. So much snow fell during the day that the roof of the Hartford Civic Center, a sports arena in Connecticut, collapsed under its weight. In Massachusetts, the height of the snow cover reached 60 centimeters. The locals, however, did not immediately realize that in such weather it is better to leave the car in the garage. As if nothing had happened, millions of people went to work on their own vehicles, and on the first day of the blizzard, the whole of Boston turned into one big traffic jam.
French drivers got into the Guinness Book of Records, unwittingly forming the longest traffic jam of the XX century - 175 kilometers. According to the most conservative estimates, at least five million cars are stuck on the road from Lyon to Paris. Residents of the northern regions were returning home after holidays in the Alps when a dense fog descended, which caused many accidents.
The infamous Berlin Wall stood for 28 years until the border between the western and eastern parts of the city was opened in November 1989. Over the next three days, more than three million people visited the West. And on December 22, when the Brandenburg Gate was opened for passage, the largest traffic jam in the history of the German capital was formed on both sides of them.
Sao Paulo holds the absolute record for the length of traffic jams. In the summer of 2008, the third part of Brazil's largest metropolis, suffering due to the lack of ring highways, stood up. In total, traffic has almost stopped on 265 kilometers of roads.
Millions of Chinese were trapped in a hundred-kilometer traffic jam on the outskirts of Beijing on August 14, 2010. The traffic jam finally resolved only after 11 days. Vendors of water and snacks, traveling on mopeds, shamelessly wrung prices, and drivers had no choice but to spend the night in the car. Later, some said that they did not expect to gain freedom before September.
