1. “Mountains can be seen from here,” exclaimed my wife. We stayed at a fairly cheap hotel on the edge of the Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. Instead of mountains, I saw only fog. But I still set up the camera and pointed it towards the park. When the sun and shadows play on the snow and the edges of the mountains, you get a real work of art. (Richard Duerksen)

9. When I released the shutter, a flock of starlings flew into the air. The number of these sociable birds in the UK has declined sharply in recent years, but now their population is gradually starting to stabilize. Depending on the season, starlings can gather in huge flocks. (John O'Neill)
