After being released from prison, the man decided to prove that he had not committed the crime of which he was accused. In the end, he succeeded. When Bunn was cleared of all charges, he burst into tears right in the courtroom.
In 1991, there was an attack on police officers in New York. Officer Rolando was killed and Robert Croson was wounded. He became the only witness in the case. John Bunn, who was only 14 at the time, and his friend were charged with second-degree murder.
John spent 17 years in prison until he was released on parole in 2009. All the time in prison and a decade after his release from prison, Bunn tried to prove his innocence. After his release, he even founded an organization for the protection of prisoners.
The Bunn case was reopened only in 2016. And then it turned out that the case was full of inconsistencies. The witness said that the attackers were white, and Bunn and his friend were dark—skinned; the prints at the crime scene did not match those of the suspects. And Detective Louis Scarcella just rigged the evidence in the case.
As a result, the court acquitted Bunn and dropped all charges against him. The 41-year-old man burst into tears right in the courtroom.
Bunn could no longer contain his emotions, walked up to the judge, grabbed her hands and buried his face in them.
Bunn's friend, who served 24 years in prison, was also cleared of all charges. And the murder cases led by Detective Louis Scarcella will be reviewed.
