Contrary to possible expectations, the film "Black Sea" is not some kind of adventure action about gold diggers, but a measured and adjusted psychological drama, in which the focus is not on external events, but on a complex bouquet of internal conflicts of the characters. The director of the film, Kevin McDonald, who has already established himself with the Oscar-winning film The Last King of Scotland, solves a very non-trivial task in the film: he transfers the plot of John Huston's classic western The Treasures of the Sierra Madre about greed, paranoia and the clash of different characters and cultures into the closed interiors of a submarine .
The name of the film "Black Sea" has recently appeared in the world of cinema - the Brazilian young horror master Rodrigo Aragan shot the film of the same name, in which there was a sea monster necessary for the genre. There is no such monster in Macdonald's film, but his image hovers invisibly over the tape. In fact, the "Black Sea" is very similar to the "Alien", only without the monster that appears from the outside. This function is assumed by representatives of humanity.
A special charisma is given to the film by the constant play with communication between the characters of the film - they communicate either in English, or in Russian, or with gestures, or with facial expressions, or with some kind of visually intangible vibrations, which perfectly holds the attention of the viewer, not allowing any Take your eyes off the screen for a second.
According to director Kevin McDonald, most of the shots depicting Sevastopol and its environs were shot almost by accident, on a modest handheld camera, which he took with him just in case. Together with cinematographer Christopher Ross, they came there as tourists - to look around, to find landscapes suitable for the background. There was no money to organize a full-fledged shooting, so we had to aim the Canon lens at interesting objects right from the bus window. Many of the resulting shots were so good that they entered the film with little or no retouching.
Jude Law, who very convincingly played the role of an old seasoned submariner in the film, underwent a special accelerated course in naval training, spending three days aboard a real submarine. And in order to get used to the characters and feel the complexity of what is happening in the frame, the actors first had to shoot inside a real submarine for two weeks, and only then the film crew moved to the pavilion and a specially built pool.
In the filming of the film, a real Soviet submarine was used, which even has an unofficial personal nickname - "Black Widow". She is currently moored near Stroud Pier on the River Medway, Kent, UK.
The film was very well received by film critics, receiving positive reviews, including from Russian publications such as Vedomosti, Time Out, Rolling Stone, Interview, Empire, Vedomosti and others. The well-known Russian film critic Anton Dolin in his review described the film as “a strong, professional, exciting, at times even non-standard adventurous film novel of the 21st century. And it's a legitimate reason for patriotism."
