A huge number of police, blocked streets, searches on the approaches and a black moving mass, which occupied all the surrounding streets. From afar, it all looked like an alien invasion or a parade of unknown enemy troops.

In fact, it's just 50,000 ultra-Orthodox Jews who gathered in lower Manhattan today to protest the introduction of conscription of Jewish religious schools in Israel.
