It was established in June 2012 by the UN to support the idea that the pursuit of happiness is a common feeling that unites people from different parts of the world.
Why exactly March 20? Because it is the day of the spring equinox. Almost throughout the world, today is equal to night, and the UN considered that this is a symbol of the equality of all inhabitants of the planet who have the same rights to happiness.
Each of us has our own taste for happiness, wishes them happiness and gives them this selection, which contains two dozen joyful moments.
In 2012, the UN declared March 20 as the International Day of Happiness to support the idea that the pursuit of happiness is a common feeling for all people on our planet.
Also, according to the founders of the holiday, today is intended to show that happiness is one of the main goals of humanity. The UN calls on all countries to strive to improve the well-being of every person.
By establishing the International Day of Happiness, the UN also seeks to draw the attention of the world community to the fact that economic development must be balanced, equitable and inclusive. The result of the implementation of such a development model will be sustainable economic growth in countries with a subsequent reduction in poverty levels.
In addition, the UN argues that in order to achieve a global state of happiness on the planet, it is necessary to support economic growth with social and environmental programs.
Interestingly, the initiative to establish the International Day of Happiness came from a small mountainous country - Bhutan.
It is believed that the residents of the Kingdom of Bhutan are the happiest people in the world - champions of the Gross National Happiness Index, which measures the national well-being of citizens.
By the way, the very concept of the Gross National Happiness coefficient was introduced and cultivated by the fourth king of Bhutan and became one of the concepts of the country’s unofficial state philosophy.
Also, to reflect the well-being of people and the state of the environment in different countries of the world, the International Happiness Index (Happy Planet Index) was introduced in July 2006.
The phenomenon of happiness is studied by philosophy, ethics, psychology and theology. Physiologists study happiness in close connection with the so-called “happiness hormones” - endorphins, serotonin and dopamine.
For thousands of years, the concept of happiness has provided the broadest scope for creativity for poets, artists, musicians, and actors. And of course, every person walking through life with all its joys and worries necessarily comprehends his own unique little Great Happiness along the way.
