But even the most common remedies we are accustomed to when ill can cause harm if used incorrectly. Find out which of them require special caution and in what situations they can be dangerous to health.
Everyone has probably heard the popular medical saying: "Medicine in a spoon, poison in a cup." But not everyone knows that even if you strictly follow the dosage, storage rules and do not exceed the expiration date, some common medications can pose a health risk. And what's most dangerous is that we keep many of these medications in our home medicine cabinets and take them at the slightest sign of illness. Which pills and drops should you be especially careful with?
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as analgin, ibuprofen and paracetamol relieve pain and reduce fever, so they are often taken without much thought. However, behind this external relief there are serious health risks. These drugs can negatively affect the gastric mucosa, causing gastritis, ulcers and even stomach bleeding.
Analgin can cause anemia if used for a long time, and acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) reduces blood clotting, which can lead to uncontrolled bleeding. Indomethacin, although effective in combating inflammation, can cause hallucinations and have a negative effect on the nervous system.
Decongestant nasal drops are another popular product that can be found in almost every home. They quickly make breathing easier by narrowing blood vessels, but when used for a long time (more than five days), they can cause headaches, dizziness, and even addiction. Their long-term use is especially dangerous for children. In some cases, it can lead to serious consequences, such as seizures, loss of consciousness, and even coma.
Diuretics remove excess fluid from the body, but they also remove important electrolytes, such as potassium. Potassium deficiency can cause weakness, muscle pain, and irregular heartbeat. Moreover, a high dose of a diuretic can dramatically lower blood pressure, which can lead to fainting and headaches.
Today, aspirin is most often prescribed to prevent heart attacks and strokes in patients with cardiovascular diseases. However, its effect on the body goes far beyond the cardiovascular system. Aspirin has a negative effect on the epithelium of the stomach, kidneys, blood vessels, and even the uterus. Long-term use of this drug can lead to the development of ulcers and erosions in the stomach and duodenum.
Many people consider herbal remedies and herbs to be a safe alternative to synthetic drugs. However, even in this case there are risks. Firstly, when self-medicating, it is easy to make a mistake with the dosage, because it is difficult to determine the exact content of active substances in herbs. Secondly, medicinal plants can enhance or weaken the effect of other medications, which often leads to unpredictable consequences.
For example, golden root should not be used for hypertension and serious nervous disorders, chokeberry is contraindicated for increased blood clotting, and St. John's wort can reduce the effectiveness of hormonal drugs.
Before taking any medication, it is worth consulting a doctor. Even if we are talking about familiar means, such as analgin or aspirin, their uncontrolled use can cause serious harm to health. Store medications correctly, do not exceed the recommended dose and be sure to read the instructions. In case of doubt, it is always better to seek professional help.
