"Arrival": why sci-fi thriller about the alien invasion of Russia is the story of your life

On November 11, 2016, the premiere of the sci-fi thriller directed by Denis Villeneuve "Arrival" will take place in Russia, according to the plot of which mysterious flying objects appear on the surface of the planet. Fact #1. The film is based on Ted Chan's novella "The Story of Your Life" (Story of Your Life, 1998). Initially, they wanted to call the film "The Story of your Life", but the results of focus group tests showed that most people did not like this name, and eventually it was replaced with "Arrival".

Fact #2. Director Denis Villeneuve and the team of authors have made a lot of efforts to ensure that the script of the film corresponds to the existing scientific tradition. To do this, the famous British physicist Stephen Wolfram and his son Christopher were invited as consultants to the project.

Fact #3. The poster of the film, where the Oriental Pearl TV tower was mistakenly placed in Hong Kong, which is actually located in Shanghai, caused a wide resonance in the online space. The outrage reached the point that less than 24 hours after publication, the post was removed from all pages of Paramount on social networks and replaced with the correct version.

Fact #4. The alien ships depicted, including on the poster, in their shape are an exact copy of the Norwegian candy lakrisbåt ("licorice boat").

Fact #5. Denis Villeneuve has dreamed of making such a film since childhood. "I've been dreaming of making a sci-fi picture since I was ten years old. This genre allows you to reveal the dramatic component of the film with the help of a variety of futuristic tools," Denis said. It is noteworthy that after finishing work on "Arrival" Denis began to create the film "Blade Runner 2".

Fact #6. On the set of Arrival, Jeremy Renner and Amy Adams met for the first time after the movie American Scam (2013).

Fact #7. Among the three locations where alien ships land are the state of Montana (USA), Great Britain and Russia. Interestingly, the locations in the film are the same as in John Christopher's fantastic story "When the Tripods Came" (1988).

Fact #8. It seems a strange coincidence that both performers of the main roles in the film — both Jeremy Renner and Amy Adams — appeared in films based on comics about the invasion of aliens on our planet. Amy played the role of Lois Lane in the movie "Man of Steel" (2013) (where the inhabitants of the planet Krypton invade the Earth), and Jeremy played the role of Hawkeye in the movie "The Avengers" (2012), according to which the superheroes are opposed by representatives of the alien race Chitauri.
