A family with three children lives in a huge underground bunker with an area of 550 square meters. The American refuses to leave his shelter and is ready for a possible nuclear catastrophe. He spent a huge sum on repairs and arrangement of new housing, but claims that their family feels very comfortable, despite the lack of sunlight and fresh air in the bunker.
Ruben Romero, a 45-year-old artist and web consultant, started thinking about where he wants to live eight years ago. He realized that ordinary life on the outskirts of Peachtree City, Georgia, was not for him. The man was considering options for living on a yacht, an island or in a submarine until he read information about how some people restore nuclear shelters from the Cold War.
Ruben and his wife, 45-year-old Joan, found a bunker in the Midwest. They immediately liked this nuclear shelter of the 1960s very much. The couple embodied an unusual idea for several years, and eventually moved together with their three children to their new bunker house in July 2020.
A man wants to turn a spacious shelter into a place where his children can live with their families and socialize. Previously, this shelter was used to support communication channels between the East and West Coasts and was built in case of a nuclear attack.
Nevertheless, the American says that, having moved to live in a bunker, he did not set himself the goal of preparing for the apocalypse. But he is confident that he will be able to protect his family and housing in case of danger. Friends offer Ruben to make a sunroof in order for daylight to get into their home, but the man refuses such an idea.
The owner of the shelter is sure that here they will be able to survive even an earthquake. The building is built of concrete and is located underground, so it will move along with the soil without collapsing.
The bunker is protected from electromagnetic radiation - a copper grid is installed inside the walls, which does not let it through. The entrance to the building is closed by an explosion-proof door weighing 1360 kg, and on the other side there is an emergency exit with the same massive door.
Now Ruben is installing a ventilation system for energy recovery, which supplies air without losing a lot of heat. The ceiling height in the bunker is 5 meters. The man wants to divide the space into two floors and place the bedrooms on the second tier.
At the moment, the family uses the largest room in the shelter as a kitchen. There is an induction cooker, microwave, toaster and stove.
Despite the fact that Ruben is working hard on the arrangement of the bunker, he does not advise others to buy similar buildings. A lot of money is spent on repairs and equipment. Such housing cannot be considered as an investment, but the man chose this option for the well-being of his family.
On the arrangement of a new home, the American spent about 300 000 – 500 000 dollars (22.2 - 36.7 million rubles). At the same time, he does not regret the money spent, because he does not want to live in an ordinary house or apartment.
The father of four admits that friends have repeatedly dissuaded him from buying a bunker, but he did not give up his idea. Many believed that he would not be able to bring it to life. Despite everything, Ruben was able to achieve what he wanted. The American intends to continue improving his unusual house in order to live in it with his family in comfort and mutual understanding.
Meanwhile, there is a whole village of bunkers in the USA. It is located in a former military depot in South Dakota.
