But the heroes of our review are not just cold — they were really freezing. Only by some miracle they managed to survive after being "thawed". And we'll cover that below.
23 February 2001, seventeen-month-old Erika Nordby of Edmonton, Canada, went out of the house. Snowy weather and strong wind the baby has not stopped. The worst thing is that at the time of the clothes she was wearing only a diaper and t-shirt, which, of course, are unable to protect the child at a temperature of -24°C. soon Eric just froze in the snow.
You all asked a reasonable question: "How it so happened that this little girl was alone on the streets?" The fact that at that time, the mother of Erica Leila was still asleep, and when woke up, found that daughters are not around, and rushed to look for her.
Following in the footsteps of girls, Layla soon discovered in the snow the frozen baby. The terrified mother brought the daughter into the room, wrapped with a warm blanket and called an ambulance. Arriving medics took Erica to the hospital, where she was connected to a special machine, which helped to re-breathe life into the tiny body.
When Eric was taken to the hospital, she had two hours didn't have a pulse, and body temperature did not exceed 16°C. the Girl considered clinically dead and the doctors called a miracle that she managed to survive. Moreover, the baby does not even require amputation of frostbitten extremities. The only thing that had the child in the future, it's a skin graft on the leg and a course of physiotherapy, to be able to walk.
In 2006 Mitsutaka Uchikoshi went up with friends on mount Rokko in Western Japan. 7 Oct man strayed from the group and disappeared. Found it a few weeks later. By that time he already had a pulse, organs ceased to function, and body temperature was 22°C.
Doctors are still perplexed how Uchikoshi managed to survive. They expect that a man fell into a hypothermic state at an early stage, which was like a kind of hibernation. Thanks to this, his brain function was protected and was not injured, and subsequently recovered fully.
Uchikoshi later said that he tripped and lost consciousness and when he came to himself — lay down on the grass and fell asleep. Then the man remembers nothing.
10 may 1996 49-year-old Beck weathers almost killed during a failed attempt to conquer Everest. It is worth noting that shortly before the ascent of man performed surgery on eyes to correct nearsightedness. Then Beck did not even know that on top of the mountain, the cornea can change and this will impair the vision significantly.
Mountain guide tried to dissuade Beck from further lifting and advised him to stay and wait when he will return from the summit. However, he never returned and died trying to help another climber. So when in the mountains a heavy snowstorm, withers was left all alone with impaired vision.
The man lay in the snow for a few days. He was conscious, but the body was constrained by frostbite to move he could not. Climbers stumbled on the buried in the snow Withers, decided that he was dead, and continued the descent. When, in the end, brought down to the foot of the mountain, everyone thought he was dead. But doctors had not lost hope, and a day later Beck miraculously recovered.
A man's life was saved, but due to severe frostbite he lost his nose and part of both hands (right arm amputated at the elbow on his left arm, he lost all fingers). Later, withers wrote the book "Left For Dead" ("die Cast"), in which he shared his story.
Eva Wisnierska — German paraplanerists of Polish origin, the numerous winner of the Championships of Germany for paragliding. 14 Feb 2007 the girl made a training flight over New South Wales, Australia, when suddenly a violent storm.
Eva was not in forces to resist him, as he was at high altitude. As a result, the athlete has brought in a storm cloud that was moving at a speed of 40 m/s, for indicated altitude 9 946 meters. At this altitude the ambient air temperature is around -50°C.
Soon the ewe was nothing to breathe, and she lost consciousness. Most likely, that is what saved her life, as the work of the heart and other organs in extreme conditions slowed down and the body dropped into a kind of hibernation. In this condition she spent approximately 40 minutes.
Soon shedding her ice glider closed, and Eva began to fall to the ground with a speed of 200 km per hour. At a height of 6 900 meters paraglider opened again and the girl recovered from the strong shaking. The first thing she saw was the glasses stuck to the ice. It covers the entire glider and the instrument panel, which has preserved the characteristics of its shocking flight.
Gathering all the remaining forces, Eva managed to get out of the storm clouds and land near a small farm. There she found other paragliders — after 3.5 hours from the moment of start and at a distance of about 60 km from the launch site.
In 1999, Swedish radiologist Anna Bagenholm fell into the icy water when he went skiing in Norway. The result is nearly an hour the woman was to sing under a thick layer of ice. During this time she experienced extreme hypothermia — her body temperature decreased to 13.7°C. This is one of the lowest temperatures during hypothermia, allowing the human to survive.
In the water near Bogenholm came cardiac arrest. Despite this, the girl was rescued — it took the efforts of dozens of doctors and 9 hours of continuous operation.
10 days later after the incident, Anna woke up paralyzed from the neck down. To fully recover after the incident it took her a few months.
