From whom, if not from them, can you learn about useful tips and life hacks?
The flight attendants shared their secrets, and we got 10 life hacks that will help you make traveling much more enjoyable.
1. How to get flight attendants to serve you more carefully
Most passengers try to choose seats in the front of the cabin of the aircraft in order to get out as soon as possible after landing and increase the chances that they will get their favorite lunch option. But the flight attendants know that if you are sitting in the back, you will be served more carefully. The reason is simple: flight attendants do not like to answer calls in the front of the plane, since by answering one, they will probably collect similar requests from other passengers along the way. This can be a problem, because there is often not enough extra vodka, pillows, earplugs and toothbrushes on planes, and on short flights there may not be enough time for additional maintenance on top of the schedule. Nevertheless, it is easier for passengers sitting at the end of the cabin to bring an additional bottle of wine or whatever they ask for.
2. How to iron clothes easily and quickly
A flight attendant with thirty years of experience advises: "Use an iron to straighten your hair to put your clothes in order when you are in a hurry and you don't have time to stand at the ironing board."
3. As always, sleep in a clean bed
A flight attendant with 19 years of experience says: "Never lie down in hotels on bed linen that does not have folds indicating that it has been rolled up. This means that someone has already slept on it."
4. How to darken a hotel room
A flight attendant with 15 years of experience shares her advice: "Use clothespins on a trouser hanger to fasten the curtains in the hotel; this way light will not leak through them."
5. How not to damage your hearing
One of the flight attendants says: "Try not to fly when you have a bad cold. So you can damage the eardrums and lose your hearing. It happened to me once: I couldn't hear properly for a week, and it hurt like hell."
6. How to avoid the neighborhood with a small child
It is impossible to avoid the cry of an upset child (and there is no one to blame for this), but you can reduce unpleasant sensations without sitting in the cabin in a place next to the partitions. These partitions are the only places on the plane near which parents can safely secure a baby cradle, and, as a result, most children under one year old will be there.
7. How to deal with jetlag
Says one of the flight attendants: "The ritual of going to bed helps me fall asleep. An hour before bedtime, put aside all electronic devices, drink tea and read a little. This usually works, but if I can't sleep for more than an hour, I just get up, do something, and then try to fall asleep again."
8. How to take fewer things with you
A flight attendant with a year of experience says: "Before the trip, call the hotel and find out if they have a washing machine and dryer. If there is, take with you a couple of bags of washing powder and antistatic wipes for drying in a hermetically sealed bag. So you will be able to get rid of things for two to four days, depending on the length of your trip."
9. How to save space in a suitcase
A flight attendant who has been working for a year says: "My favorite travel life hack is the technique of folding clothes into scrolls. I often leave home for a few days, sometimes for three weeks, and save space in my suitcase by twisting clothes, rather than folding them."
10. How not to miss free breakfasts
"If you know that you will not be able to come to a prepaid meal at the hotel, because you are leaving before it starts, or you do not have time before it ends, check with the administrator whether the hotel can collect a snack or lunch with you before or after the appointed time. Usually it's a fruit, a bottle of water and a piece of cheese, but it saved my stomach rumbling from hunger several times," says one of the flight attendants.
