10 Oscar winners who dared to ignore the ceremony

The nominees of the 92nd Academy Awards Ceremony in 24 nominations will be presented on January 13, 2020, the ceremony will take place on February 9, 2020. The whole world of cinema will gather at the Dolby Theater. It is a great honor for everyone to be among the nominees, and even more so to receive a golden statuette. However, there have been many cases in the history of the Film Academy when future winners sabotaged the ceremony for one reason or another.

1. Paul Newman

Newman was among the nominees six times before the jury in 1987 recognized his image in the film "The Color of Money" as the best of the year. However, the actor ignored the ceremony and later told why: "It's like 80 years to seek the favor of a pretty girl. When she finally relents, you're forced to say, 'Damn, I'm too tired, sorry.'"

Knowing that the role of Vito Corleone in the film "The Godfather" would most likely bring him an Oscar, Brando boycotted the 1973 ceremony and instead sent a girl from the Apache Indian tribe named Sacheen Littlefeather. She received a statuette and read out a short speech written by the actor about the oppression of the indigenous people of North America.

3. Elizabeth Taylor

By 1966, actor Richard Burton had already had to fake a smile four times when his name was not in the envelope. Therefore, having got into the list of nominees for the fifth time, he decided to stay at home. And persuaded his wife Elizabeth Taylor to follow his example (they were both nominated for the film "Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf?"). As a result, Taylor was recognized as the winner, and Burton was again in the gap.

Michael Caine was nominated for the title of best supporting actor for his role in the film "Hannah and her Sisters", but chose not to break away from the filming of the thriller "Jaws: Revenge", whose rating on the website Rotten Tomatoes is 0%. The actor learned his lesson and in 2000 was in the hall when he was awarded a statuette for his role in the film "Rules of Winemakers".

The famous director and screenwriter was not at any of the three ceremonies when he was awarded the Oscar. He came only in 2002 to present films about the September 11 attacks made by other directors. And at the same time he told me what he doesn't like about the Oscar: "It's a stupid concept. If you agree that you are worthy of the award when you are declared the winner, then you must also agree that you are not worthy when you lose."

6. Alice Brady

The actress could not come to the triumphant ceremony of 1937 for herself: Alice was lying at home with a broken ankle. Instead, a man who, as it turned out, had nothing to do with Brady came on stage and received a gilded plaque (until 1944, statuettes were not given out for supporting roles). Neither he nor the award was ever found, but the Academy gave the American a duplicate.

After learning that he was among the nominees for the lead role in the war drama "Patton" (1970), Scott warned the organizers in advance that he would not come to the ceremony. He was still declared the winner, and the actor in response called the "Oscar" a "two-hour meat parade" ("two-hour meat parade"). By the way, now the event lasts at least four hours.

In 2003, O'Toole became the first to refuse an honorary Oscar. Before that, he lost the race for the title of best actor eight times and wrote a letter to the Film Academy: "I'm still in the game and I expect to get a real reward. Could you hold the honorary "Oscar "until I'm 80 years old?"

9. Eminem

The rapper won the award for the soundtrack to the film "8 Mile", in which he himself played the main role. The award, however, was not received by him, but by the co-author of the composition Lose Yourself, Luis Resto. In an interview, Eminem said that he did not expect to win and therefore did not go to the Dolby Theater. He thought he was going to beat Bono. Bono, by the way, didn't show up either — apparently he thought Eminem would win.

Kubrick has never been awarded an Oscar for Best Director, but in his collection there is an award for best visual effects for the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Kubrick did not appear at the ceremony, and Burt Lancaster, who received the statuette for him, joked that Stanley was now on Mars — looking for locations for a sequel.
