The strangest and most disgusting products from the United States according to foreigners
The US has a bad reputation for food. From the culinary horrors at state fairs like deep-fried lobster on a stick to the monstrously high-calorie fast food, everything seems to hint at the excessive gluttony of Americans who like a lot of fat, sugar and salt. But it's not just the deep-fried butter or garlic sauce at Papa John's that disgusts foreigners.
In one of the discussion threads on Reddit, foreigners were asked to name typical American dishes and products that they consider disgusting or strange. Many participants in the discussion named things that for ordinary Americans turned out to be an integral part of the diet.
Soft cheese Cheese Whiz. "It tastes like plastic and cancer," writes user Screech.
Corn porridge. "I was at a dinner in the south, maybe in Mississippi. I asked the waitress what it was, and she looked at me with something uncertain and puzzled. I just realized that the man who was sitting next to me was passionately in love with it, and the sounds he made while eating were terrifyingly similar to the sounds of a baby chomping, " writes yummy_yummy_red_wine.
Velveeta cheese. "I know that many have already mentioned American cheese, but Velveeta should stand alongside Cheeze Whiz on the list of unnatural food," writes TheMadBotanist.
Hershey's chocolate. "American chocolate and sweets are quite unpleasant to my taste. Hershey's tiles have such a dusty texture (as if I found a half-eaten chocolate egg five weeks after Easter) and the taste is not rich enough. Cadbury's milk chocolate used to be great, but Kraft bought Cadbury a few years ago, and the recipe seems to be gradually changing, " Protonbeamface writes.
Red Wines liquorice candies. "I tried Red Vines, expecting it to be red ropes of bliss. They tasted like soap, " writes CthulhusWhore.
Bread from supermarkets. "I still can't digest the regular bread from the supermarkets here. It's very sweet. Same with medium burger buns or hot dogs, " tigersmadeofpaper writes.
Casseroles. "Casseroles made with cream soup from anything. Green bean casserole, tuna casserole, mushroom casserole. I know what these Campbells canned soups are like, we have them too, and the idea of using them as an integral ingredient in the main dish makes me cringe just thinking about the amount of sodium. Especially these casseroles, which should be covered with crumbled chips, " writes InquisitorVawn.
Foam in root beer. "An old college friend of mine from Austria thought the foam cap in the root beer was disgusting," pokeySoakins writes.
Liquorice candy Twizzlers. "Twizzlers are so weird. They don't taste like red licorice at all. They taste like cardboard. I was very disappointed when I finally tried them, " writes movealittlecloser.
Pop Tarts cookies. "A friend of ours sent some Pop Tarts. They were disgusting. Do people really eat them for breakfast? I couldn't even swallow two bites," writes homovore.
Fruit ice. "Does ice with syrup count as food?" writes nanlayo.
Beef jerky. "I tried this thing a couple of months ago. It tasted like plastic and had the texture of a worn shoe insole. It's amazing how they took a piece of cow and turned it into something completely inedible, " writes stw1313.
Sausage in corn dough. "I bit it once when I was in Florida, and I couldn't eat any more. I'll never understand why people think it's delicious, " writes Biwton.
Cookies with gravy. "I have cousins in America. One morning they took me to breakfast and made me try cookies with gravy. This gravy is just disgusting! The waitress told me it was just lard mixed with flour, salt and pepper. Who can eat this in the morning? " - writes ilovenewtons.
American bacon. "American bacon seems strange to me, it's too thin, and every time I see a picture of bacon from someone from America, they always have it cremated. Juicy bacon is much better! " - writes RtardDAN. "It's thin, wiry and tough. This is the only product I liked better in the UK, " adds bloodyhellalex.
Meatloaf. "Why would I want a meat roll? Good thing I didn't try it, but it looks disgusting," BoChiggedyBoDiddley writes.
Breakfast cereal. "They have all these different colors and strange flavors, and some even have marshmallows in them. It's not the perfect breakfast food. No wonder so many children are obese, " writes TheInsaneDane.
