The film is set in a near-disastrous and dangerous future in Australia, where, after the collapse of the global financial market, the mines of the Australian desert are still profitable. In this world similar to the Wild West, human life is worth little, gasoline and ammunition are the main commodity, and strangers communicate, usually pointing weapons at each other.

After the premiere of the film, the press often heard a parallel between the "Rover" and the Mad Max so beloved by the audience. In fact, both here and there the action unfolds against the background of the post-apocalyptic degradation of society. But, as the director of the film David Michaud himself notes, his film is not about how cool it is to drive along abandoned roads and shoot with maniacs frenzied with permissiveness, but about that scorched desert into which a cozy civilized country turns when everything that used to connect and unite people.

The work of preparing the script, which Michaud usually did himself in a long and tedious creative search, this time he shared with Joel Edgerton. I must say that Edgerton is familiar with the harsh laws of the Australian outback firsthand, wandering through wild Australia has already fallen to his cinematic lot. He once fled the persecution of the colonial authorities in the company of Heath Ledger - the 19th century Australian Robin Hood Ned Kelly ("Kelly Gang"), who was hanged in spite of a nationwide petition for clemency. Guy Pearce also experienced the wild customs of the Australian wilderness in John Hillcoat's crime drama The Proposal, where his character, partly forced by circumstances, partly in righteous anger, kills his older brother, a bandit, at close range.

David Michaud, who acted in the film not only as a director, but also as a screenwriter, originally wrote the character of the protagonist - who, curiously, never mentions his name in the film - specifically for Guy Pearce.

The film was preceded by David Michaud's debut film, Under the Laws of the Wolf, enthusiastically met by festivals and the press, which tells about the collapse of a criminal family of the 80s and is similar to Rover in an atmosphere of some lethargy and hopelessness.

Despite all its "art-house", the film was well received by film critics, receiving positive reviews, including Russian publications such as Vedomosti, Time Out, Rolling Stone, Interview, Empire and others.
