To get a tattoo, sometimes you need to endure quite a lot of pain, but the very meeting of the artist with the customer bears the imprint of a certain mysticism.

Photographer Anne Burlock Lawver emphasizes both the pain and the serenity of the tattooing process in her Indelible ("Indelible") series, which consists of images taken during the year at the New York tattoo salon Gunmental Tattoos.

And although she doesn't have tattoos, she was curious to learn more about why people put them on their bodies, and to understand the nuances of the process associated with pain.

While photographing, she found that she managed to shoot moments of pain much less often than moments of calm.
