In 1967, businessman Joe Conforte became the owner of the Mustang. At first his business was illegal, and in 1971, when prostitution was legalized in Nevada, his institution turned into the first official brothel. This event served to legalize prostitution in 12 of the 17 counties of the state. In 1999, the US Internal Revenue Service seized the property of the Mustang after the management of the brothel was convicted of fraud and racketeering. The women who worked there were evicted, and a heavy lock was hung on the door. In the same year, the Mustang building became federal property, which is managed by the Land Management Agency.
