The end of the era of matches: a match factory closes in Belarus after 127 years of operation
In the city of Pinsk, the center of the Pinsky district of the Brest region, a match factory is closing, which has been operating steadily for the last 127 years. The reason is the unprofitability of the enterprise. According to representatives of the factory, matches have already outlived themselves as a commodity.
The Pinskdrev factory will no longer be engaged in the production of matches, since this product is already unprofitable. This was reported in the city executive committee, noting that the company will be repurposed for the production of chairs. None of the 300 employees who have worked at Pinskdrev for many years will lose their jobs — all of them have already been distributed to other enterprises of the holding.
It is not yet known when a new factory will appear on the site of the match factory. It is specified that this will be done at the expense of the company.
The match factory first opened in 1892, still under the name "Volcano". Then the capitalist Louis Gershman brought all the necessary equipment from abroad and started production. At first, all the processes were carried out manually and only five years later some of them managed to be mechanized. But in the same year the factory burned down and was rebuilt again only in 1902.Later, this enterprise had to survive two world wars, the capture by the Germans, nationalization, destruction and restoration of the building, and much more. But the decline in demand for matches hit him "fatally".
Netizens reacted to this news in different ways:
Do you still use matches or have you switched to lighters for a long time?
