August Sherman was an American official who held a high position in the New York registry office in the early 20th century. For many years working on Ellis Island in New York, he helped foreigners move and settle in the States. Communication with immigrants inspired him to create a series of photographs in which the settlers were depicted in their best national costumes.
In 1907, these photographs were published in the National Geographic magazine.
