Meet Nyakim Gatweh, a South Sudanese model who teaches people not to be afraid of the dark. With her incredibly dark skin, she breaks down the barriers of traditional beauty and encourages others to do the same.
The 24-year-old flamboyant fashion icon, who now lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is not shy about her skin color. “One Uber driver suggested that I bleach my skin. In response, I just laughed. You won't believe the questions I get on social media,” laughs Nyakim.
Gatweh is not only a supporter of diversity in the fashion industry but also an activist for the rights of black people around the world. She was even called the "Queen of Darkness" and she liked this nickname. “Black is bold, black is beautiful. Don't let American standards damage your African soul,” she says and encourages you to love the skin you live in, no matter what color or shade it is.
