Honest and poignant photos from Bruce Davidson's album "Brooklyn Gangs: Summer 1959"

In Brooklyn Gang: Summer 1959, acclaimed photographer Bruce Davidson brings together for the first time black and white photographs from his very first project about teenage gangs in Brooklyn. He started doing it when he was only a little older than his heroes. Using his camera in the summer of 1959, he photographed the generation of Marlon Brando and James Dean in public places - cafes, tattoo parlors, at parties - and in intimate, homely settings, reflecting the spirit of that time.

Young sixteen- and seventeen-year-old teenagers rebelled and divided the world into friends and foes. In their appearance and habits - the length of their hair, the way they smoke cigarettes or clothing - everything determined their belonging to one or another gang.
