Holidays and cults, body and sex in the photographs of Christina Garcia Rodero

Cristina Garcia Rodero has long been a cult photographer herself, and far from it due to her passion for shooting all kinds of religious holidays and mystical cults practiced from Spain to Haiti. For 40 years, Christina selflessly photographed her native Spain, turning it inside out with a hard and frank look, she crucified her homeland, penetrating into its very nature, exploring its roots and looking into its most inaccessible corners.

Rodero was born in 1949 and has been fond of photography since childhood. At the age of 40 she became a member of the famous "Magnum" (the first of the Spanish photographers), and later she began to work with the equally famous agency "Vu". In 1989 she received the Eugene Smith Award for photography of traditional Spanish festivals. In 1998 she became an honorary member of the Royal Photographic Society.

“I tried to photograph the mysterious, true and magical soul of popular Spain in all its passion, love, humor, tenderness, anger, pain, in all its truth; the fullest, most intense moments in the lives of these characters as simple as they are irresistible, with all their inherent strength. This goal became a personal challenge that gave me strength and understanding and in which I invested all my heart,” writes Christina on her page on the Magnum agency website.

Her photographs evoke morbid curiosity, fear, and sometimes horror, they echo in our hearts with something ancient, deceased in the genes. Christina sees where we came from and where we are going.

Venezuela. Cult of Miria Lionsa

48. Maria Lions is the central figure of one of the Venezuelan cults, a mixture of African, indigenous, and Catholic beliefs, similar to the Caribbean Santería. And the tribe respects Mary as the goddess of nature, love, peace, and harmony.

49. The cult has a huge following in many sectors of Venezuelan society from small rural villages to the modern capital of Caracas, where there is a monument in her honor.

50. According to the legends, Maria Lyons was born in 1502 in the region of Yaracuy. She was considered to be a well-to-do and strong woman, said to still be living on Mount Sorte, where her followers come regularly to pay homage to her by calling her "Queen".
